Dusk comes early in a German December. The market square lights up with rows of wooden huts, strings of lights and a giant tree, and the air smells of toasted almonds, gingerbread and roasting chestnuts. Everyone is holding something warm.

German Christmas markets (Weihnachtsmärkte) run from late November until just before Christmas in almost every town, with famous ones in Nuremberg, Dresden and Cologne. The food is the highlight: gingerbread (Lebkuchen), candied almonds, roasted chestnuts, potato pancakes, stollen and chocolate-dipped fruit. In 2026 most snacks cost roughly €3–8. The best-known drink, Glühwein, is alcoholic and many sausages are pork, but there is plenty to enjoy without them, including the alcohol-free Kinderpunsch.

This guide lists what to eat and drink, what to avoid, the most famous markets, practical tips and German phrases.

Drinks

  • Glühwein – hot spiced wine. Alcoholic; skip.
  • Kinderpunsch – hot, spiced, alcohol-free fruit punch; the best alternative.
  • Heißer Apfelsaft – hot apple juice with cinnamon.
  • Hot chocolate – sometimes offered with a shot of rum; order it without.

Hot drinks come in decorated mugs with a deposit (Pfand), usually a few euros. Return the mug for your money back, or keep it as a souvenir.

Halal note: most sausages are pork, Glühwein and many punches contain alcohol, and some sweets use rum or gelatin. Stick to Kinderpunsch, candied almonds, chestnuts, potato pancakes and chocolate fruit, and ask about fillings. Many markets have a Turkish or Middle Eastern stall, and German cities have plenty of halal restaurants nearby. See our halal food travel guide.

Famous markets

  • Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt – one of the best known, famous for Lebkuchen.
  • Dresden Striezelmarkt – among the oldest, going back to the 15th century, and home of Dresden stollen.
  • Cologne – several markets, including one in front of the cathedral.
  • Small towns – often more relaxed and just as pretty.

Practical tips

  • Markets usually run from late November to 23 December; some continue after Christmas.
  • Weekday afternoons are calmer than weekend evenings.
  • Dress warmly: you will be standing outside for hours.
  • Carry cash, although many stalls now take cards.
