Bánh mì is Vietnam’s baguette sandwich: a light, crackly roll filled with pâté, cold cuts or grilled meat, pickled carrot and daikon, cucumber, coriander and chilli. In Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) you buy it from street carts and small shops from early morning, for roughly 25,000–70,000 dong (VND) in 2026. The city’s most famous shop is Bánh Mì Huỳnh Hoa, known for heavily loaded sandwiches.

What goes into a bánh mì

The bread came to Vietnam with the French, but the sandwich is entirely Vietnamese. The roll is made with some rice flour, which gives a thin, shattering crust and a very light inside. Common fillings:

  • Pâté spread inside the roll, often with butter or mayonnaise.
  • Chả lụa (Vietnamese pork sausage), roast pork and other cold cuts.
  • Grilled meat such as pork (thịt nướng) or meatballs (xíu mại) in some versions.
  • Fried egg (bánh mì ốp la) – a popular breakfast version.
  • Pickled carrot and daikon, cucumber, coriander and chilli for crunch and freshness.

Where to eat bánh mì in Ho Chi Minh City

  • Bánh Mì Huỳnh Hoa (District 1) – the most famous shop in the city, known for thick, meat-heavy sandwiches. It costs more than a street cart and there is often a queue.
  • Street carts everywhere – look for a glass-fronted cart with fresh rolls, busy with people on motorbikes in the morning. This is how most locals buy bánh mì.
  • Hội An – if you travel north, Hội An has its own bánh mì fame (Bánh Mì Phượng is the best-known). See our Hội An bánh mì guide.

Check current opening times before visiting a specific shop; carts can move.

Halal note: most bánh mì carts use pork cold cuts and pork pâté, and the meat is not halal. If you eat halal, the safest order is bánh mì ốp la (fried egg) with vegetables and no pâté; ask Có thịt heo không? (Is there pork?). For halal meat bánh mì, look for halal-certified shops, which are few but growing in Ho Chi Minh City.
