Watch Parisians leave a bakery at lunchtime and you will see it: the end of the baguette is already gone. Nibbling the warm tip, the quignon, on the walk home is almost a national habit.

The best baguette to buy in Paris is the baguette de tradition: by French law it may contain only flour, water, salt and yeast or sourdough, with no additives, and it has a crackling crust and an open, chewy crumb. Buy it from an artisan boulanger that bakes on site; each year the Grand Prix de la Meilleure Baguette de Paris names a winner. In 2026 a tradition costs roughly €1.30–1.70 and a plain baguette about €1.10–1.40. The bread itself is halal-friendly; the sandwiches are where to check for ham.

This guide explains the types, how to pick a good one, the famous competition, how to order like a local, and what to put inside it.

French baguette-making was added to UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage in 2022, recognising the skill and daily ritual behind the loaf.

How to pick a good one

  • Colour: deep golden to reddish-brown, not pale.
  • Sound: the crust should crackle when you squeeze it gently.
  • Scoring: open, lifted cuts along the top, called grignes.
  • Crumb: creamy-coloured with irregular holes, not white and even like sliced bread.
  • Smell: toasty, slightly sweet and wheaty.
  • Time: bought within a few hours of baking. A baguette is stale by the next day.

The best baguette in Paris contest

Every year the city of Paris holds the Grand Prix de la Meilleure Baguette de Paris. Judges score tradition baguettes on baking, taste, crumb, look and smell.

The winning baker supplies bread to the Élysée Palace for a year, and past winners display the award in their window. Walking to a recent winner is a fun way to see a new neighbourhood.

Ordering like a Parisian

  • Always say Bonjour before anything else.
  • Ask for une tradition or une tradi. Staff will know exactly what you mean.
  • Ask for pas trop cuite (lighter) or bien cuite (well-baked) to match your taste.
  • Many bakeries sell half a baguette: une demi-baguette.
  • Bread is carried unwrapped or with a small paper band. That is normal.

When to buy

Most bakeries bake several times a day, with batches in the early morning and before lunch and dinner. The queues at 7–8am and 6–7pm are the best clue.

Many bakeries close one or two days a week, and some close for part of August, with a sign pointing to the nearest open one.

What to put inside

Halal note: a plain baguette contains no animal products. Ready-made sandwiches often contain ham, and chicken in ordinary bakeries is not halal. Paris has many halal sandwich shops and bakeries, especially in the 18th, 19th and 20th arrondissements (for example around Barbès and Belleville), or buy a baguette and fill it yourself with cheese from a Paris fromagerie.
